Leeuwin

/luːwɪn/ noun

Leeuwin is an iconic name in Western Australia, with a rich deep history.

Cape Leeuwin is the most southwestern point of mainland Australia, a peninsula where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. It is an area renowned for its rugged coastline and natural beauty.

The Leeuwin-Naturaliste ridge sits within the land of the Wardandi Noongar people. The Dutch are credited with the first European sighting of the peninsula in 1622, naming it ‘t Landt van de Leeuwin’ meaning ‘The land of the lioness’. In 1801, Captain Matthew Flinders of H.M.S Investigator renamed the area Cape Leeuwin at the commencement of the historic first circumnavigation of the continent.
